A huge fan of film titles this not only fulfilled a dream but I'm pretty sure this is the most exposure i've ever had as it fronted dozens of films over the years. Given the time we had Pete, Gordo, Will, Patton and the whole crew worked a miracle- if not at least made a beautiful thing. Had you seen it with 3d glasses it was pretty fuckin' cool. Thanks Tom. <image:title>ART DIRECTION and PRODUCTION DESIGN - HEAD OF BACKGROUND DEPT for BOBBY'S WORLD</image:title>
<image:caption>The great Frank Furlong gave me the reins to the look of Howie Mandel's Saturday morning show on CBS. Bobby had so many fantasies, that after 20 some shows and 40 or 50 fantasies it became a challenge for to come up with a new style for each one of them. I ended up doing every style from Van Gogh to Keith Haring to Ralph Steadman. I was painting about two of these keys a day, mostly with with cel paints on mostly on sections of rolled, pegged background board. These are few and of poor 1991 color copy quality but wtf, they're all I could find. Above is Bobby's Frankenstein fantasy. Any chance I had to make a show black and white I took. Still do today.</image:caption>

<image:title>ART DIRECTION and PRODUCTION DESIGN - DUCK DODGERS - Art Director</image:title>
<image:caption>TWO TIME ANNIE AWARD NOMINEE - OUTSTANDING ART DIRECTION in an animated TV series. I directed the look of DUCK DODGERS for 2 seasons (26 half-hour episodes) for the creative tag team of SPIKE BRANT and TONY CERVONE. The hilarious Ted Blackman art directed props and layouts while I drafted and art directed some of the best painters in Hollywood toward the final look of the show. And we used REAL PAINT much to the chagrin of our production studio in Korea. How many shows left are using real paint i wonder? You will notice that every key will have a single basic color dominate. Olive or teal or rust etc.. I wanted a clean, posterized, graphic quality that would compliment the characters without excessive hues that could distract. A background is a background after all. This was my third Annie Award nomination... without a win. No shame in losing to the insanely beautiful Samurai Jack tho. I'd even voted for them. I worked with a lot of awesome artists on DODGERS but i doled out the lions share of the paintings to these magnificent bastards; Dennis Durrell, Steven Nicodemus, Joel Perod, Eric Semones and my head of background on IRON GIANT the lovely and talented Dennis Venizelos. Thank you guys again! Here are some of the beauties my team came up with...   (details to follow)</image:caption>

<image:title>ART DIRECTION and PRODUCTION DESIGN - ANIMATED FEATURE FILM - Writer/Director/Producer</image:title>
<image:caption>Here's a feature film I've developed into a solid three act screen story about a giant and his pet boy. There is a tremendous amount of visual and story development behind LUMBER. It's exactly the kind of story we go to the movies for. The above pitch-poster is a WORK IN PROGRESS. I switch out character designs as the project develops. Shown here is an early creature design holding a Pixarish character that I've tried to age up a little. The kid had the right look and expression and was great inspiration to further explore his design as the story develops. The credits are obviously a gag too. just placeholder stuff. except the logo. i love the logo.   Final Teaser Poster to come...</image:caption>

<image:title>ART DIRECTION and PRODUCTION DESIGN - ANGRY BEAVERS pilot designer</image:title>
<image:caption>In the early 90's I helped develop the test pilot episode for Nick that would lead to a pretty good series run produced by Mitch Schauer. The three or so minute episode was based on one of the story ideas i had (actually the weakest of the three i'd submitted) where Dagget (who i named after dag, which is dried shit on a goats ass) and Norberts cable went out during a storm and they had to stop each other from going nuts. I was in Korea for a week teaching a great crew of artists in Seoul how to do my paint spatter-off-register thing. I also pushed a Louis Jordon song for the shows opening theme which the composer based his music on. HISTORICAL NOTE: The show was created when a few of us at Guenther/Wahl were discussing how all the heads of children programming at every network were women. Someone said they were probably pissed that they couldn't get prime-time programing when someone said "I bet they're angry beavers." Before the childish gigglimg subsided someone had doodled a kind of 'Spy vs. Spy' looking beaver. One thing led to another and before we knew it our little pilot was the best tested Nick produced that year and a show was born. Truth. I have the pilot somewhere on vhs and will post when I've unearthed it someday.        </image:caption>

<image:title>ART DIRECTION and PRODUCTION DESIGN - Heavy Metal</image:title>
<image:caption>Acrylic on board. 18' x 40" Bird took this into an early meeting with the brass at WB and said it went a long way toward helping sell the relationship between the boy and the bot. At this point in the robots development I was trying to keep him hulking, ape-like and built like a locomotive. I loved what Joe Johnson was doing - everything was kinda tubular, the proportions human, even Rocketeerish. I wanted the giant to look as heavy as his name. I was all about the Iron, the box, the barrel and the bolts. Stealthy angles and a battleship armor. I even tried rusting him and giving him a smoke stack. He was an IRON giant after all so pretty much all my designs went toward pushing for something boxy, bolted and impossibly heavy. Something that would leave craters with every step. A massive, mechanical death machine... with a heart. I thought of the GIANT as a Frankenstein type of character- a misunderstood monster that you were horrified by at first sight but grew to love. King Kong, Hunchback, Phantom, etc. You cant go wrong with the classics.</image:caption>

      <image:title>About</image:title>
<image:caption>In the late 1970's Johnny Carson had a fascinating guest on his show named Frank Abignale Jr. who was promoting a book about his fraudulent adventures called 'Catch Me if You Can". That book inspired a bored 15 year old to make a fake Sports Illustrated press pass to get into sporting events and interview athletes. A total dork but I did my best to play the part, get past the guards and conduct dozens of brief and awkward interviews with celebrities I had no business being with (Thomas Hearns, Reggie Jackson, 19 year old Wayne Gretzky, Jack Nicklaus, etc). In the photo above I'm at the Silverdome inside the Lakers locker room trying not to pull the cord from my cassette recorder while interviewing Kareem.</image:caption>
